Symi

The Greek island of Symi has enchanted visitors for millennia.   It was love at first sight for me, and over the last two decades, I have been lucky enough to spend a large part of each year on Symi.  The generous friendship of the islanders have made Symi a home from home for myself and my family and friends.  With more time on my hands now, I have opened my home to visitors from around the world, sharing this place of serenity and luxury where all that is best in Greek culture and history can be enjoyed in a setting of unparalleled natural beauty.

It is always a thrill to re-tell stories of Symi,  the miracles of Panormities,  the ghost of the Russian house,  the German soldier who saved the village from destruction.  The stories are endless dating back as far as Homer.  But each of us has a story of our own,  Symi has immeasurably enriched the story of my life, and I invite you to let Symi do the same for yours.

The warm water of the Aegean is a five minute scooter ride away for "Thalassotherapy".  Explore Symi's ageless Greek hospitality up in the village of Chorio and down in the harbour of Yialos. Wander the herb covered hills.  Find  "a bank where the wild thyme blows" or join in the vibrant nightlife.

 THE HISTORY

Greek history records Homer’s Iliad. Symi Is part of the story. He tells us that King Nereus, (known for his good looks) of Symi sent 3 ships to fight on behalf of Greece, against the Trojans.  A charming Museum with artifacts covering Neolithic, Attic, Roman, Byzantine, and recent history gives one some idea of the eras of civilization that have enriched the culture of the current generations.

Symi has over 400 churches. From the best known, Panormitis, the Monastery of the Archangel Michael, on the South West coast  (a pilgrimage site for the Greek Orthodox Church) to the tiniest chapel holding a congregation of 10, each is lovingly tended and kept in pristine condition and visitors are encouraged to come in and light a candle.

The Kastro overlooking the harbour has been home to the armies of Greece, Rome, the Knights of St John, Italy, Germany and Britain.  You are likely to meet a friendly donkey up there now.

The melee of yachts coming into the harbour in the late afternoon is a great spectator sport. Many of the rich and sometimes famous, make Symi a stop on their journeys.
